Topic: "Reflections on Information
Systems Strategizing"
PROF. ROBERT D. GALLIERS, PhD. (presença confirmada)
Currently Dr. Galliers
is Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Bentley College,
USA. Prior to taking up this post in 2002 he was professor of Information
Systems and research director in the Department of Information Systems at
the London School of Economics, with whom
he retains a close association as a Visiting Professor.
A leader in the field of management information systems, Galliers is
editor-in-chief of the Journal of Strategic Information Systems, and a
fellow of both the British Computer Society and the Royal Society of Arts. A
graduate of Harvard University, Bob Galliers received a Masters in
Management Systems from Lancaster University, and a Doctorate in Information
Systems at the London School of Economics. His doctoral research focused on
strategic information systems planning practice in Britain and Australia. He
was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree by Turku School of Economic
and Business Administration in Finland in 1995. He was appointed an Honorary
Professor of the European Institute for Advanced Management Studies in
Brussels in 1997. He is past president of the Association for Information
Systems, and is co-chair of the 2002 International Conference on Information
Systems. Dr. Galliers research is transdisciplinary in nature and
currently focuses on IT and business innovation/transformation and the
management of change; information systems strategy; strategy alignment;
knowledge management, and intra- and extra-organizational impacts of the
Internet. He began his professional career outside of academia, first in
social work administration and then in management consulting.
Palestra: "Reflections on Information Systems
Strategizing"
We have come a long way in the
theory and practice of Information Systems Strategy (ISS) - or have we?
Professor Galliers will reflect on developments in the field of ISS from the
early days of formal IS planning within organizations to such recent
concepts as information architectures, knowledge management and
inter-organizational systems. But what have we really learned from these
developments over the past 40 years or so? What is the current status of ISS
in theory, and in practice? Professor Galliers will reflect critically on
the 'state of the art', concluding - not as some have done - that ISS is in
a terminal condition, but that much more remains to be done in what he
contends is still a crucial research domain for the IS community.

Topic: "Knowledge Transfer:
Short-circuiting the learning cycle?"
PROF. SUE NEWELL, PhD.
Sue Newell is Cammarata Professor of
Management in the Department of Management at Bentley College, USA, and
Chair of Bentley's Research Committee. She is also visiting Professor at
Royal Holloway, University of London and has a PhD from University of Wales,
1983. Prof. Sue Newell has taught on a wide range of courses at all
levels – from first year undergraduate, through MBAs to PhD. Teaching areas
covered include: KM, OB, HRM and IS. Obviously, given her current research
interests specialist courses in innovation and knowledge management are key
teaching themes. She has also taught on a range of specialist executive
courses. Prof. Newell has also been involved in all aspects of programme and
course development. For example, while at Aston University she was the
Director of the Masters programme in Personnel Management; and while at
Warwick University she was involved in the implementation of a new Masters
programme in Organization Studies. In her current position, she have been
involved in re-validating parts of our External and Executive programmes in
order to ensure that they fit with the new QA guidelines. Prof. Newell have
also been an external examiner in several universities, overseeing both
undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. In her most recent post Prof.
Newell was Director of the External and Executive programmes. At present
this encompasses four major programmes – a Distance Learning MBA run through
the University of London, a collaborative MBA run with Hong Kong University
(SPACE department) and two executive programmes for major corporate clients
(and MBA for JP Morgan and a Certificate in Professional Recruitment
Services for Reed International).
"Knowledge Transfer:
Short-circuiting the learning cycle?"
Knowledge is
considered to be a key organizational resource in the 21st century and the
knowledge management 'movement' has alerted organizations to the fact that
they should more strategically exploit this knowledge. Companies are thus
lured by the suggestion that they can gain competitive advantage by the more
astute management of their knowledge base and in particular, by the transfer
of knowledge across individuals, groups and organizational units using IT.
In this presentation, we will reflect upon what knowledge transfer actually
implies - essentially that it is possible to short-circuit the learning
cycle, so that individuals do not have to rely on their personal experiences
to identify better practices but can learn from the codified lessons of
others. More importantly, we will consider the characteristics of knowledge
– that knowledge is distributed, ambiguous and disruptive – that makes its
transfer highly problematic. We will relate this to the learning cycle and
so identify barriers to knowledge transfer. We will conclude by considering
ways of overcoming these barriers that emphasize the importance of social
systems as well as technical systems.
