Marseille
Combining art de
vivre with a stimulating economic activity, Marseilles is the key metropolis of Southern Europe. Number one industrial and
service pole in the south of France, Marseilles offers many advantages: a
significant history of international trade, a young, lively and creative
population, a strategic geographical location between Europe and the
Mediterranean, a privileged quality of life and environment. Marseilles also
asserts its identity as the major economic centre of the Mediterranean basin.
The Euro-Mediterranean project for urban planning anticipates Marseilles as
playing the role of capital of Southern Europe and as the economic driver for
the region. This project is the largest urban planning development scheme ever
undertaken in France. It is also currently the most ambitious European project.
The transformations planned for Marseilles will be spread over a number of years
until 2010, with the objective of significantly boosting the economic, cultural
and entertainment activities for the town and its surrounding region. This has
already succeeded in attracting foreign investors to the area and in the
implantation of headquarters for major multinational companies who will normally
create employment in Provence within record time, in particular in the fields of
top level management and administration.
Key figures for the Bouches-du-Rhône Department:

The Palais de la Bourse was
built between 1852 and 1854 and was the first building to be constructed
under the Second Empire. It launched the great wave of public buildings that
were erected at the time and is home to the oldest French Chamber of
Commerce (1599). The sculpted decor represents the magnificent history of
trade in Marseille. |
